About Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is narrow and dark. The walls drop more than 2,000 feet in places, and at its narrowest point the canyon is only 40 feet wide at the river. The Painted Wall, streaked with pale bands of igneous rock, is the tallest cliff in Colorado, at about 2,250 feet.

The canyon became a national monument in 1933 and a national park in 1999. The Gunnison River has been cutting the canyon for about two million years, and in places sunlight barely reaches the bottom, which is where the name comes from.
