About Badlands National Park
Badlands is a stretch of eroded buttes and pinnacles in southwestern South Dakota, striped in pink, tan and rust, with a big mixed-grass prairie behind it. The rock gives up fossils of ancient rhinos and horses. Bison and bighorn sheep are easy to spot along the loop road.
It was made a national monument in 1939 and a national park in 1978. The South Unit lies inside the Pine Ridge Reservation, and the Park Service manages it together with the Oglala Lakota. The Lakota knew this ground long before it had a park name.

At the point used for Badlands National Park, it puts the added glow at about 10% of the natural brightness of a moonless sky (a ratio of 0.099). That makes it 15th darkest of the 47 parks it covers. Lower is darker. This is a model, not a reading taken at the park, and it describes one point, so the edges of a large park can differ.
